Why Does French Matter for Canada PR from India?
French can add up to 50 extra CRS points in Express Entry when you reach NCLC 7 in all four abilities, and it can open the French-language category of selection. You prove it with TCF Canada or TEF Canada, whose results are valid two years. Your starting level decides the time needed.
Why does French help a Canada PR application?
Canada has two official languages, and Express Entry rewards both. If you already have English results, a second official language is a way to add points to your profile.
There are two separate benefits. First, French language ability earns points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Second, according to IRCC's description of category-based selection, there is a French-language proficiency category that requires NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities. Draw dates, sizes and cut-offs change, so read them on the IRCC rounds page rather than relying on a blog; our page on Express Entry French draws covers the French draws.
French is an addition to your profile, and it works best when you treat it as a separate, deliberate project with its own timeline.
How many CRS points does French give?
French points come from two places: points for your French as a second official language, and a bonus for French. The figures below are taken from the IRCC CRS grid, and they apply per ability (listening, speaking, reading, writing) for the second official language.
| French level (each ability) | Second official language points, per ability |
|---|---|
| CLB/NCLC 5-6 | 1 |
| CLB/NCLC 7-8 | 3 |
| CLB/NCLC 9 or more | 6 |
According to the IRCC grid, the second official language is capped at 22 points with a spouse and 24 without.
The additional French bonus is larger. The IRCC grid gives 25 points for NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities when your English is CLB 4 or lower (or you have no English test), and 50 points when your English is CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities. Which case applies to you depends on your own English results.
The key words are all four: one weak ability, often writing or speaking, can stop the bonus. Use the CRS French points guide to see how your own levels combine.
What are NCLC levels and which score do I need?
NCLC is the Canadian scale for French, matching CLB for English. Each test result is converted into an NCLC level for each ability, and the conversion differs between tests. The table shows the scores for NCLC 7, the level that unlocks the French bonus, as published by IRCC.
| Ability | TCF Canada, NCLC 7 | TEF Canada, NCLC 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 458-502 | 249-279 |
| Reading | 453-498 | 207-232 |
| Speaking | 10-11 (out of 20) | 310-348 |
| Writing | 10-11 (out of 20) | 310-348 |
Note that TCF Canada scores speaking and writing from 0 to 20, while listening and reading use a 100-699 scale. TEF Canada uses different scales again. For the exact bands at every level, use the NCLC calculator.
TCF Canada or TEF Canada: which test should I take?
Both tests are recognised by IRCC and results are valid two years. The choice is about format and comfort. The table compares the formats described by the test organisers.
| TCF Canada | TEF Canada | |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 39 questions, 35 minutes | 40 questions, 40 minutes |
| Reading | 39 questions, 60 minutes | 40 questions, 60 minutes |
| Writing | 3 tasks, 60 minutes | 2 tasks, 60 minutes |
| Speaking | 3 tasks, 12 minutes | 2 tasks, 15 minutes |
A practical way to decide: try a short free sample of each and see which format you handle more calmly. We have a free TCF Canada practice test and a free TEF Canada practice test. Details of each exam are on the TCF Canada and TEF Canada pages. For test locations, see the exam centres in India page.
How long does it take to learn enough French?
Nobody can honestly give you a fixed number of months. The time depends on your starting level, the hours you can study each week, and how much of that time goes to productive skills (speaking and writing) rather than only listening and reading.
What you can plan is the structure. Reaching NCLC 7 means passing a threshold in every ability, so a plan has to cover all four. A useful sequence is:
- Measure your current level with a short check, for example the free instant level test, which uses 30 seconds of speech or a short text.
- Convert it to an NCLC estimate for each ability and find your weakest one.
- Build a weekly routine that trains the weakest ability most, and add timed practice in the real format.
- Book the exam only when your practice results stay consistently at or above your target.
Practice changes your readiness, but a practice estimate is not an official result.
How do I prepare the speaking and writing tests?
Speaking and writing are where many candidates miss the all-four-abilities requirement, because they need active production, not just recognition.
In the TCF Canada, oral expression has three tasks over 12 minutes: a guided interview without preparation (2 minutes), an interaction where you ask questions, with preparation (5 minutes 30 including 2 minutes of preparation), and a point of view without preparation (4 minutes 30). Written expression has three tasks over 60 minutes: a message to a friend or relative (60-120 words), an article, letter or note reporting an experience (120-150 words), and a comparison of two documents with an opinion to defend (120-180 words).
Practise with a clock and speak aloud, not only in your head. On FrenchExaminer, an AI examiner runs the full speaking test (speaking practice) and writing is corrected by criterion (writing practice). You can read how the feedback is built on how we score and see a sample on the example report. For task formats, see the speaking test and writing test guides.
Questions candidates ask
How many extra CRS points for French at NCLC 7?
According to the IRCC CRS grid, reaching NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities gives 25 additional points if your English is CLB 4 or lower or absent, and 50 points if your English is CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities. Check your own English results to know which case applies.
Which French test is accepted for Express Entry?
IRCC recognises both TCF Canada and TEF Canada. Each has four tests (listening, reading, writing, speaking) and results valid for two years. Pick the one whose format you handle better, and confirm the current rules on the official IRCC website before booking your exam.
How long are TCF Canada results valid for?
TCF Canada results are valid for two years, according to France Education international. TEF Canada results are also valid for two years. Keep this in mind when you choose your exam date, and check the current IRCC rules before you submit anything.
Do I need NCLC 7 in every French ability?
Yes, the French bonus points and the French-language proficiency category both require NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities: listening, reading, speaking and writing. A strong score in one ability does not make up for a weaker one, so identify your lowest ability early.
Can I check my French level before booking an exam?
Yes. A short practice check gives you a rough idea of your level before you spend money on an official exam. FrenchExaminer offers a free instant test using 30 seconds of speech or a short text. It is an estimate, not an official result, so treat it as a starting point.
Where can I see current Express Entry French draws?
Draw dates, sizes and CRS cut-offs change from round to round, so read them on the official IRCC rounds of invitations page rather than from a summary. Our Express Entry French draws page also covers the French-language category, but always confirm figures with IRCC itself.

How do I take TCF Canada or TEF Canada in India?
Both TCF Canada and TEF Canada are recognised by IRCC and results stay valid for two years. In India you book through an authorised test centre, not through IRCC. Centre lists, fees and session dates change, so confirm each one with the official test provider and the centre before you pay.
