Free TCF and TEF Canada practice: what to check before paying
Free practice can cover a lot: an instant level check, sample-format listening and reading drills, and written work you correct yourself. What it rarely gives is scored feedback on speaking and writing. Before paying for an app, check whether it matches the official test format and explains its scoring.
What does a TCF Canada or TEF Canada practice tool need to match?
A useful practice tool mirrors the real test, because you train the exact skill and timing you will be judged on. Both exams are made of four tests that IRCC recognises for immigration, and results are valid for two years. The table below shows the format to compare any app against.
| Test | TCF Canada | TEF Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 39 questions, 35 minutes | 40 questions, 40 minutes |
| Reading | 39 questions, 60 minutes | 40 questions, 60 minutes |
| Written expression | 3 tasks, 60 minutes | 2 tasks, 60 minutes |
| Oral expression | 3 tasks, 12 minutes | 2 tasks, 15 minutes |
These figures come from France Éducation international (TCF Canada) and the TEF publisher. If an app offers a speaking test with the wrong number of tasks or a different duration, it is training a different exercise. See our pages on TCF Canada and TEF Canada for the full format.
What can you realistically get for free?
Free resources are good for finding your starting point and building habits, and weaker for anything that needs a human-like judgement. Here is what is usually available at no cost and what it is good for.
- A level check. A short instant test tells you roughly where you stand before you plan study time. You can try ours at the free instant test: 30 seconds of speech or a short text.
- Sample-format drills. Original listening and reading exercises in the style of each test, such as the pages for a free TCF Canada practice test and a free TEF Canada practice test.
- Public French. News audio, radio and reading in French build the listening and reading base at no cost.
- Self-correction. You can write the tasks and compare them with the criteria, but you cannot easily judge your own errors.
The gap in free material is almost always speaking and writing feedback, because scoring them takes either a trained examiner or a well-built AI.
Why do speaking and writing need scored feedback?
Speaking and writing are the two abilities you cannot check against an answer key. A listening question is right or wrong; a spoken answer is judged on range, accuracy, coherence and fluency, so you need someone or something to tell you which one is holding you back.
The task formats are specific. In TCF Canada, written expression has task 1 (a message to a friend or relative, 60 to 120 words), task 2 (an article, letter or note reporting an experience, 120 to 150 words) and task 3 (two documents to compare and an opinion to defend, 120 to 180 words). Oral expression has a guided interview of 2 minutes with no preparation, an interaction of 5 minutes 30 including 2 minutes of preparation, and a point of view of 4 minutes 30 with no preparation.
Practice that ignores these word counts and timings will not prepare you for them. You can read how each is trained on our speaking test and writing test pages.
What should you check before paying for an app?
Use this list to compare any paid tool, including ours, before you commit money. Each check protects you from a different kind of disappointment.
- Format match. Same number of tasks, same timings, same word counts as the test you are taking.
- Original content. Be wary of any service that claims to hold real exam questions; good practice uses original exercises built in the official format.
- Scoring method. Does it say how a score is produced and by which criteria? Read ours on how we score.
- Feedback you can act on. A mark alone is not enough; look for errors named by criterion. See an example report.
- Honest wording on results. An estimate is not an official result, and no tool can promise a score.
- Pricing model. One-time payment or subscription, and what happens when it ends. Ours is on the pricing page.
- Level mapping. It should translate scores into NCLC levels using the official equivalence tables.
- A free trial of the real feature. Test the speaking or writing correction itself, not just a demo.
How do scores turn into NCLC levels, and why does that matter for choosing a tool?
Your exam score only matters through the NCLC level it converts to. IRCC publishes the equivalence tables, and a good tool shows your result in those terms so you know your real distance from a target.
For TCF Canada, speaking and writing are scored 0 to 20 and a score of 10 to 11 equals NCLC 7, while 12 to 13 equals NCLC 8. Listening and reading are scored 100 to 699: for listening NCLC 7 is 458 to 502, and for reading NCLC 7 is 453 to 498. For TEF Canada, speaking and writing run 0 to 450 with NCLC 7 at 310 to 348; listening runs 0 to 360 with NCLC 7 at 249 to 279; reading runs 0 to 300 with NCLC 7 at 207 to 232.
You can convert any result with the NCLC calculator. Be careful with tools that show a percentage and stop there: a percentage does not tell you which NCLC level you reached.
How do French results connect to Express Entry, and what should a tool never claim?
French can add points and open a dedicated category, but draws change, so always confirm on the official IRCC pages rather than relying on an app.
According to IRCC, additional points for French are 25 points if you reach NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities with English at CLB 4 or lower (or no English test), and 50 points if English is CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities. IRCC also lists a French-language proficiency category in category-based selection that requires NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities. Draw dates, sizes and CRS cut-offs vary and are published on the IRCC rounds page.
Our pages on CRS French points and Express Entry French draws explain how to read this. A tool that predicts that a given score will get you an invitation is selling certainty that does not exist.
Where should you take the real test, and what else do you need?
Practice only prepares you; the result you submit must come from the real exam, which IRCC recognises for TCF Canada and TEF Canada. If you are testing in India, see the exam centres in India page.
If your plan goes through Quebec, read about the TCF IRN and check which test your application requires before you book.
Before paying for any study tool, run the free instant test to see your starting level, then decide how much speaking and writing correction you actually need.
Questions candidates ask
Is there a free TCF Canada mock test online?
Yes, free sample-format exercises exist for listening, reading and short level checks. They usually cannot score a full speaking or writing task. Use them to find your starting level, then add scored feedback for speaking and writing when you need to see specific errors.
How can I practise TEF Canada speaking for free?
You can rehearse TEF Canada speaking alone by recording yourself on the two tasks and replaying the audio. The limit is feedback: you will hear hesitations but may miss grammar and range issues. A free instant level check gives a first outside opinion on your spoken French.
Are paid TCF Canada preparation apps worth the money?
A paid app is worth it only if it matches the official format, scores by clear criteria and gives corrections you can act on. Check the pricing model and trial the actual speaking or writing feature first. No app can promise a score or a result.
Do real TCF Canada exam questions appear in practice apps?
Be cautious with any app claiming to hold real exam questions. Good practice tools use original exercises built in the same format and timing as the official test. That trains the skill itself without relying on copied material, and it keeps your preparation honest and legitimate.
What NCLC level do I need for French Express Entry points?
IRCC awards additional French points at NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities: 25 points, or 50 points with English at CLB 5 or higher. NCLC 7 equals 10 to 11 in TCF Canada speaking and writing. Check the IRCC grid for current rules.
Can an AI examiner replace a real TCF Canada exam?
No. An AI examiner is a practice tool and its estimates are not official results. Use it to train timing, structure and accuracy before the real exam, then rely on the official TCF Canada result for your application, not on a practice estimate.
How long are TCF Canada and TEF Canada results valid?
Results for both TCF Canada and TEF Canada are valid for two years, according to France Éducation international and the TEF publisher. Plan your test date so your result is still valid when you submit your immigration application.
